McCann's Irish Oatmeal Steel Cut - Quick & EasyMcCann's Irish Oatmeal (Steel Cut Oats)

McCann's Irish OatmealOld fashioned steel-cut oats in the distinctive old-style tin. The oat groat is cut to enhance the flavor of the Irish Oat. The distinctive hearty, chewy texture of steel cuts makes them a favorite.

Steel-Cut Oats are whole grain groats (the inner portion of the oat kernel) which have been cut into only two or three pieces. They are golden in color and resemble mini rice particles.

How are they different from Rolled Oats? Rolled oats are flake oats that have been steamed, rolled, re-steamed and toasted. Due to all of this additional processing they have lost some of their natural taste, goodness and texture.

What makes Steel-cut Oats so special? Grains are essential to a healthy lifestyle and form the foundation of the food pyramid. Steel-cut oats are inherently full of nutritional value and are high in B-Vitamins, calcium, protein and fiber while low in salt and unsaturated fat. One cup of steel-cut oatmeal contains more fiber than a bran muffin and twice as much fibre as Cream of Wheat. The quality of Irish Oats and the distinctive crunchy texture make McCann's Steel-Cuts a gourmet delight.

All oats grown for and used by McCann's are free from genetically modified organisms.

The FDA endorsed Oats in the fight against Heart Disease and certain cancers. In August 1999, the FDA in the U.S. issued a further endorsement of oats. It authorized a new claim that will allow companies to promote the benefits of whole grains in relation to heart disease and certain cancers. It indicated that diets that are rich in whole grains, such as oats, may reduce the risk of these conditions.

Oatmeal is the only food that naturally contains GLA (gamma linolenic acid) an essential fatty acid critical to the body's production of the favorable eicosanoids (PGE1 - prostaglandins). Eating steel-cut oats (very slow cooking) four times a week will provide you with a good supply of GLA.

Wholegrain Oats and Type 2 Diabetes - In the U.S. almost 16 million people suffer from Type 2 diabetes with as many as 625,000 new cases being diagnosed each year. A new 10-year study published in the American Journal of Public health indicated that eating oatmeal (a wholegrain cereal) on a regular basis can help to reduce the risk of Type 2 (adult onset) diabetes. The study showed that eating 1 serving of oatmeal (equivalent to 1 cup cooked) 2-4 times weekly resulted in a 16% reduction in risk of suffering from Type 2 diabetes. By increasing consumption of oatmeal to 5-6 times weekly, there was a corresponding 39% reduction in the risk of onset of Type 2 diabetes.

Irish Oats

Grown in the rich fertile plains of Ireland - The use of oats for human consumption was well established in Ireland very early in the Christian era, for we find references to oatmeal in the Great Code of Civil Law, compiled about the year A.D. 438. There is evidence that even before this date, porridge was recognised in Europe as a characteristically Irish food.

Watered by some of Europe's cleanest rivers - The temperate, humid climate of Ireland gives the slow ripening which enables the oats to draw the goodness from the soil. This, and the clean acid-rain free rivers that irrigate the land helps to produce perhaps the finest milling oats in the world.

... perhaps the finest milling oats in the world - Some of the best oats come from the counties of Kildare (shown in orange on the map) and Meath (shown in yellow) where all the oats for John McCann's Irish Oatmeal are grown under contract.

In a hurry? Then try McCann's new Quick & Easy to get your mornings off to a healthy start. Still full of all the natural goodness of Irish steel cut oats, your daily bowl of oatmeal is now ready to eat in only 5 minutes!

Preparing Irish Oatmeal:

Microwave - Mix 1/2 cup of steel cut oats with 2 cups of water in an 8 cup bowl (the size of the bowl is important as it must be large enough to allow the oats to bubble up without spilling over). Seal the bowl with plastic wrap and run at full power for 5 minutes. Stir and finish cooking for another 5 minutes (since microwaves vary in size and power, cooking times may need to be adjusted for different models).

Sleep Tight - Soak overnight - Before going to bed, boil four cups of water in a pot, turn off the heat and add one cup of oatmeal. Cover the pot and leave overnight. In the morning cook over a low flame for 9-12 mins.

Cut Corners - Place the oats, natural or pre-toasted in a food processor. A few turns of the metal blade will break up the grains and reduce the cooking time by at least 5 minutes.

Be Prepared - One trick is to prepare five days worth of oatmeal in advance. This can be stored in an airtight container in your refrigerator and used as required. To reheat, use a microwave - heat on high for 2-3 minutes and then enjoy!

Pre-Toast - Place the steel-cut oats in a preheated 300 degree oven for approximately 20 minutes. Return the oats to a tightly covered container, storing in a cool place. Toasted oats cook in half the time.

Cook under Pressure! - When the pressure is on for a quick bowl of oatmeal - Rely on your pressure cooker. In approximately 5 minutes, pre-toasted steel-cuts will be cooked to perfection. All you need is 1 cup of pre-toasted steel-cuts, 3 1/2 cups of water and 1 tablespoon unsalted butter. Be sure to allow the pressure to release slowly according to the manufacturer's directions.

Are the oats used in McCann's Non GMO?

YES - All our oats are NON GMO. They are specially grown by local farmers - there are no GMO oat crops grown in Ireland.

Are McCann's Oat products gluten free?

All McCann’s oat products are processed in a dedicated oatmeal mill that handles only oatmeal. In the supply chain between farm and mill, there is a possible cross contamination with other grains, such as wheat and barley but we reckon that the level of non-oat grains to be less than 0.05%. Cleaning equipment within the milling process would remove the vast majority of these grains along with other elements such as stones, straw etc.

But we cannot guarantee that McCann’s oats are totally gluten free and we recommend that consumers use their own judgement as to whether they wish to use our oatmeal or not. Many celiacs can tolerate our oatmeal products without any adverse effect but they may not suit those who are particularly sensitive.
