Letter From The Editor
In an election year, politics seem to be at the forefront of every media
outlet imaginable. You can’t turn on the television or radio without hearing
some form of political banter. Believe it or not, politics has a
lot to do with what you can or can’t put inside your body. This
past year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned the use of nutritional supplements
containing the herb ephedra. In the near future, U.S. legislation is
going to ban the use of products containing highly effective prohormones such as Androstenediol,
Norandrostenediol, 1-AD, and 1-Test. What products go next is anyone's guess, but
you can bet that the more they are effective at causing physiological or performance
improvements, the more likely they are to be targeted next by the government. This
has more to do with unfair competitive advantages in sports than it has to do with
safety issues, but no one is effectively fighting for the rights of non-competitive athletes and
fitness enthusiasts.
So, should we be happy that the government is trying to protect us from supplements that are dangerous?
Think about it, the FDA allows adult consumers to use products such as alcohol and
tobacco, yet doesn’t let the consumer make a choice about ephedra or
prohormones. To date, there are few documented deaths related to
ephedra or prohormones overdose. Certainly there are some
pretty staggering death tolls associated with products such as alcohol, tobacco
and even many over-the-counter pain killers. No one is questioning whether some
people might abuse any substance and certainly kids should not be taking some
supplements, but instead of banning these
nutritional supplements for all adults, maybe
a better approach would have been to make a
minimum age requirement to use the products.
What does all of this mean to the consumer in America? First of all, rest
assured that there are still many effective and innovative nutritional products
still on the market. Also know that supplement
manufacturers will continue to research and develop cutting edge products to
help you add lean muscle, burn fat, gain strength and improve health.
Believe it or not, there
are still some old reliable stand-by supplements that have worked for many years and will
continue to be popular for years to come. One such product,
creatine monohydrate, has withstood the test of time. It still
sells very well and that is simply because it still works very effectively.
Guess what, creatine is not legal in some countries so maybe we don’t have it so
bad!
Now, what about some of the other newer products that the FDA has not picked on?
One of the most popular products today are the nitric oxide stimulators.

helping you achieve your goals. Please do all you can to let your legislators know
how you feel about the importance of supplement freedom. For the time being, let's all
be happy that we still have better access to great nutritional supplements than
many other areas of the world - and undoubtedly new science will bring us even
better products in the future.
